In accordance with Iowa State law, Horizon Science Academy Des Moines recently conducted a student lottery to select students for enrollment for the upcoming academic year.
State law requires that all charter schools utilize a random drawing or lottery system to determine admission, should the school receive more applications than vacant seats available. Students (applicants) who are not selected in the lottery system are then automatically placed on a waitlist that is also randomly sorted.
To abide by charter school codes and laws as mandated by the State of Iowa, as well as to ensure transparency in the selection and lottery process, the video below was recorded by the committee who conducted the lottery.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, lotteries were held for Kindergarten (1 available seat) as well as for 2nd grade (4 available seats), with waitlists created for these grades as well as for several other grades.

You will be notified of your selection via PowerSchool, where you will have access to continue the enrollment process.
For students and families who were not selected, please know that you were added to the waitlist, with your place on the list also randomly selected. Should a vacancy occur, you will also be notified of your eligibility to enroll your student via PowerSchool.
